Bronze Roman lock bolt from the 1st–3rd centuries AD, titled Cerrojo de cerradura – Siglos I-III d. C., with a height of 12 mm, width of 78 mm and depth of 5 cm, in good condition, acquired from a gallery/antique shop in Spain in 1960 with original authenticity.
Description from the seller
Roman bronze lock bolt – 1st–3rd centuries AD.
Culture: Roman Empire
Period attributed: 1st–3rd centuries AD
Material: Cast bronze
Typology: Ancient lock mechanism
An interesting piece of Roman engineering manufactured in cast bronze, corresponding to the sliding bolt of an ancient lock mechanism used to secure chests, caskets and other valuable objects.
It presents an elongated and asymmetric structure, with a rectangular plate pierced by various geometric openings, among which an elaborated pierced motif in the shape of a cross or X stands out.
These openings played an essential role in the security mechanism, allowing interaction between the key and the internal locking elements to release and move the bolt.
One of its ends features a narrow, elongated extension, while the opposite end preserves a solid rectangular section.
The surface shows an attractive archaeological patina in olive green and ochre tones, with mineral deposits and signs of surface wear.
An evocative display of the technical sophistication of Roman civilization, which helps us understand how personal goods were protected about two thousand years ago.
A piece of special interest for collectors of Roman archaeology, ancient instruments, and objects related to daily life in the Empire.
