Description from the seller
Bronze Roman lock bolt – 1st–3rd centuries AD
Culture: Roman Empire
Assigned period: 1st–3rd centuries AD
Material: Cast bronze
Typology: Ancient lock mechanism
An interesting piece of Roman engineering crafted in cast bronze, corresponding to the sliding bolt of an ancient lock mechanism used to secure chests, boxes, and other valuable objects.
It presents an elongated and asymmetric structure, with a rectangular plate pierced by various geometric openings, among which stands out an elaborate perforated motif in the shape of a lozenge or cross.
These openings played an essential role in the security mechanism, allowing interaction between the key and the internal locking elements to release and move the bolt.
One of its ends features a narrow, elongated extension, while the opposite end retains a solid rectangular section.
The surface shows an attractive archaeological patina of olive green and ochre tones, with mineral deposits and signs of surface wear.
An evocative showcase of the technical sophistication of Roman civilization, enabling us to understand how personal belongings were protected about two thousand years ago.
A piece of particular interest for collectors of Roman archaeology, ancient instruments, and objects related to daily life in the Empire.
