Description from the seller
Roman grooming instrument in bronze with an ornamented handle – 1st–4th centuries AD.
Culture: Roman
Chronology: 1st–4th centuries AD
Material: Copper alloy (bronze)
Typology: Personal hygiene instrument, nail cleaner type
Elegant grooming instrument of Roman tradition, made in cast metal and characterized by its elaborate ornamental handle, with a truncated-conical profile and perforated upper end.
It is especially noteworthy for the meticulous decoration of the handle, composed of successive annular moldings, horizontal relief bands, and a central ornate section with fine, diagonally incised lines of great regularity.
The upper end culminates in a small suspension ring integrated into the structure, which allowed the instrument to be carried together with other personal hygiene accessories.
The lower part extends into a flattened sheet of rectangular profile, with signs of wear and surface alteration.
These small utensils formed part of the grooming sets used in Roman times, reflecting the importance placed on body care and personal grooming in the daily life of the Empire.
It preserves an attractive surface with olive-green, brown, and dark bronze tones, with corrosion deposits and wear that highlight its delicate decoration.
An interesting piece of Roman archaeology, especially appreciable for the ornamentation of its handle and its connection to the everyday customs of Antiquity.
