AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Roman chest lock with bronze plate and movable bolt – 1st–3rd centuries AD.

Attributed culture: Roman Empire

Suggested chronology: 1st–3rd centuries AD.

Material: Bronze and a metallic locking element

Typology: Locking hardware for a small chest or coffer

Interesting set of ancient hardware, formed by a rectangular bronze plate and a movable locking element with an elegant bilobed profile.

The main plate preserves two fixation rivets at its upper ends, as well as a rectangular opening intended for the coupling of the mechanism.

Above it sits a distinctive metal hasp, of sinuous profile and double rounded widening, equipped with articulation and fastening elements.

These mechanisms reflect the development of locking systems used in Antiquity to protect small chests and containers intended to safeguard personal items and valuables.

The piece stands out for the attractive contrast between the blue-green patina of the bronze and the brown and reddish tones of the movable element, with corrosion deposits and wear that provide an interesting archaeological texture.

Its joint preservation allows appreciation of the distinct components of an ancient locking system, making it a particularly illustrative example of functional metalworking.

An interesting testimony to the security technology of Antiquity, of special appeal to collectors of Roman archaeology, historical hardware, and objects related to daily life in the Empire.
