Chevaux Vieilles maisons Chaudun is an unsigned original 1896 gelatin-silver print photograph in the documentary genre, 21 × 16 cm, by Cadre forestier de la direction de Gap, sold by Propriétaire ou revendeur, depicting the abandoned Chaudun commune in the Hautes-Alpes and its historic, forest service context.
Description from the seller
Municipality of Chaudun, an emblematic abandoned village in the Hautes-Alpes.
A village completely purchased and evacuated by the State in 1895-1899, then reforested by the forestry services (RTM / ONF) to combat soil erosion.
Former aid house or Chaudun forestry house, serving as a base and refuge for the agents of Eaux et Forêts working on the major reforestation works in the valley at the turn of the century.
Highly historical and mythic character of this “sacrificed village.” The tragic story of its inhabitants, forced to sell all their lands to the State before going into exile, fascinates historians and regional collectors.
Era documents showing precise and named buildings of Chaudun (such as the aid house) before their total ruin are particularly rare on the market of cartophily and old photography.
