Moldavite (Czech: Vltavín) is an olive-green to dull-green glassy substance formed by a meteorite impact in southern Germany (Nördlingen Ries), which would make it a kind of tektite. It was first presented to the scientific public in 1786 as “Chrysolithe” from Týn nad Vltavou in a lecture by Professor Josef Mayer of Charles University in Prague, held at a meeting of the Bohemian Scientific Society (Mayer 1788). Zippe (1836) first used the term “Moldavit,” derived from the town Moldauthein (Czech: Týn nad Vltavou) – today in Bohemia (Czech Republic), where the first described pieces came from.
Campo Del Cielo meteorites are classified as coarse iron IAB octahedrites. This meteorite impact occurred about 4,000 to 6,000 years ago. The first discovery was documented in 1576 by a Spanish captain named Miravel, although the actual impact was likely observed by indigenous people who originally called this region the “Field of the Sky.”
Herkimer diamonds are double-terminated quartz crystals found in exposed dolomite outcrops in and around Herkimer County, New York, and the Mohawk River Valley in the USA. They are not diamonds; the name “diamond” derives from their clarity and well-formed faces. Since the first localities were in the village of Middleville or in the town of Little Falls, the crystal is also known as the Middleville Diamond or Little Falls Diamond.
