Description from the seller
Reliquary Mensae D.N.J.C – Italy, 19th century
Reliquary in gilded alloy, Italian craftsmanship of the 19th century.
The architectured and fully openwork mount presents a rich Baroque ornament of relief angels, scrolls and foliage, organized around a central theca.
The whole, resting on four feet with volutions and surmounted by a cross, is punctuated by red and green glass cabochons, imparting a remarkable polychromy to the gilded decoration.
The central theca contains a fragment accompanied by its handwritten titulus « Mensae D.N.J.C. », abbreviation of Mensae Domini Nostri Jesu Christi, i.e. “of the Table of Our Lord Jesus Christ.”
It is therefore a contact relic or fragment traditionally attributed to the Holy Table, associated according to Christian tradition with the table of the Last Supper.
On the reverse, the theca retains its ecclesiastical seal in red armorial wax, still in place.
A very beautiful example of an Italian Baroque reliquary, remarkable for the richness of its mount, its abundant angelic decoration and the quality of its workmanship.
Wearing and small ancient alterations in keeping with age and use.
The photos are an integral part of the object’s description and complete its presentation. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The item will be carefully packed and shipped with a tracking number, in order to guarantee fast and secure delivery.
Happy bidding
In accordance with canonical law (can. 1190 §1), this sale concerns only the reliquary as a sacred art object. The relics it contains are not the subject of the transaction, but are included gratuitously for their historical and cultural value.
