Description from the seller
Reliquary of the Column of the Flagellation of Christ
Reliquary in gilded alloy, Italian work from the 19th century.
The architectural and fully openwork mount presents a rich Baroque decoration of relief angels, swirls and foliage, organized around a central theca. The whole, resting on four escroll-shaped feet and surmounted by a cross, is punctuated with red and green glass cabochons, lending a remarkable polychromy to the gilded décor.
The central theca houses a small fragment accompanied by its manuscript titulus referring to the Column of Our Lord Jesus Christ, i.e., the column to which Christ was bound during the Flagellation.
On the reverse, the theca retains its ecclesiastical red wax seal, still in place.
A very fine example of an Italian Baroque reliquary, remarkable for the richness of its mount, its abundant angelic decoration and the quality of its execution.
Wear and small ancient alterations in keeping with age and use.
