Description from the seller

Reliquary of the Sponge of Christ's Passion

Reliquary in gilded alloy, Italian 19th-century work.

The architected, fully openwork mount features a rich Baroque decorative program of relief angels, scrolls, and foliage, organized around a central theca. The whole rests on four scroll-footed feet and is surmounted by a cross, punctuated by red and green glass cabochons, lending remarkable polychromy to the gilded decor.

The central theca contains a fragment accompanied by its handwritten titulus « Spongia D.N.J.C. », for Spongia Domini Nostri Jesu Christi, i.e. “Sponge of Our Lord Jesus Christ.” It is a relic traditionally attributed to the Sponge of the Passion, the one which, according to the Gospels, was dipped in vinegar and presented to Christ on the Cross.

On the reverse, the theca retains its ecclesiastical seal in red wax, still in place.

Very beautiful example of an Italian Baroque reliquary, remarkable for the richness of its mount, its abundant angelic ornament, and the quality of its workmanship.

Worn and small ancient alterations in keeping with age and use.

The photos are an integral part of the description of the objects and complete its presentation. They allow you to appreciate its condition and features. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.

The object will be carefully packed and shipped with a tracking number, to guarantee fast and secure delivery.

Happy bidding

In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale concerns only the reliquary as a sacred art object. The relics it contains are not the subject of the transaction, but are included gratuitously for their historical and cultural value.
