AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Antique hand-carved wall console with male mask – rich woodcarving – ca. 1850–1900

Exceptionally expressive antique wall console from the latter half of the 19th century, richly worked in deep relief with a powerful male head, heavy curls and stylized foliage ornaments.

The console is fully three-dimensionally carved. The face protrudes strongly from the background, with carefully modeled eyes, nose, beard and curly hair. Under the head the ornaments flow into bold volutes and leaf motifs. At the top the woodcarving forms a pronounced support on which a small decorative object can be placed.

Such carved consoles and corbels formed part of wealthier interiors and architectural woodwork in the 19th century. Comparable pieces from the Victorian and Neo-Gothic periods were made with human, mythological or grotesque masks and used as supports for shelves, fireplaces and other interior woodwork. An English example from circa 1880 is described, for instance, as a wall console carved in oak with mythological masks; around 1860 similarly Gothic Revival consoles with deeply cut faces are also known.

Also in the broader European furniture tradition, 19th-century wall consoles with face masks, acanthus leaves and scrollwork occur. Christie’s, for example, describes a 19th-century Italian wall console with a carved male mask, flanked by acanthus and scrolls.

The style of this specimen closely aligns with the Neo-Renaissance / historicizing interior art of circa 1850–1900. Comparable late-19th-century consoles were executed as architectural ornament and could originally have been part of a fireplace, wall paneling, cabinet or furniture construction.
