Italian mid‑century raised basket and magazine holder in wrought iron and bamboo, dating from the 1950s–1960s, 79 cm high, 45 cm wide, 21 cm deep, in good vintage condition.
Description from the seller
Newsstand / Vintage Mid-Century Work Basket in woven wood and wrought iron – Italy, 1950s/60s
Elegant and charming elevated catch-all basket of Italian artisanal craftsmanship, dating from the mid-20th century (the full Mid-Century Modern period). This piece, with its warm, geometric design, was originally used in homes of the era as a sewing basket for wool yarns or as a refined living-room magazine holder beside the sofa. Today it is an eclectic piece of furniture, also ideal as an indoor planter or decorative element for rustic, mid-century, or boho-chic spaces.
Made with a sturdy, dense hand-woven braid of premium flexible natural wood strips (bamboo/chestnut split), characterized by a warm original amber patina of the era and equipped with a tall central contoured handle.
• Base and Support: The bottom of the basket consists of a solid plywood panel, ensuring stability and robustness.
• Legs: Raised structure in black wrought iron rod turned with a twirl, a typical artisanal detail of Italian production in the 1950s and 60s. The feet end with plastic caps to avoid scratching floors and protect delicate surfaces.
The item presents in good vintage condition, structurally solid, stable and robust. The wood of the outer weave and the iron structure are healthy and retain the beautiful patina of time, with only slight and normal signs of aging that attest to its authenticity. One of the two small leather fasteners on the lid has come loose and needs reattachment.
Note on the lining: The original green and yellow fabric lining shows evident tears, including at the bottom, and signs of wear due to age, and is left in place to preserve the historical originality of the lot, but is suitable for easy replacement or removal according to the buyer's taste.
An iconic piece of rural design and Italian mid-century modernism, perfect for collectors or to give a unique touch to a corner of the home.
