Description from the seller
Medal of the Fighting War Volunteer 1940–1945 (Left)
Medal of the Fighting War Volunteer
• Description: On the front, a powerful, frontally depicted figure with a bare torso holding a sword.
• Clasp ("Pugnator"): The bronze band bearing the inscription PUGNATOR (Latin for 'warrior') is a special combat distinction. It was specifically awarded to volunteers who had actually come under fire in a combat situation at the front.
Medal of the War Volunteer 1940–1945 (Right)
Medal of the War Volunteer
• Description: Shows a frontally depicted soldier in uniform with a beret and a spear. The background features a large letter "V", which stands for both "Volunteer" and "Victory". Behind the soldier, rays of sunlight spread, symbolizing regained freedom.
• Background: Instituted on 16 February 1946. This medal was awarded to Belgian and foreign civilians who volunteered for service in the Belgian armed forces, the Royal Air Force (RAF), the Royal Navy or the British merchant navy before 8 May 1945.
The medal was instituted on 16 February 1945 by the Prince-Regent (Charles of Belgium). The aim was to honor Belgian citizens and foreigners who had volunteered for active service in the armed forces during World War II. This stood in contrast to regular conscripts who simply followed their call-up notice.
