Description from the seller
Historical Catholic devotional image of the “Holy Face of Christ” after the Shroud of Veronica. The ensemble consists of a finely executed print on light fabric, a black-gold wooden frame with glass, and a Latin certificate attached to the back.
Special features
* Latin certificate with the year 1887 (MDCCCLXXXVII) from the era of Pope Leo XIII.
* Red wax seals on the image and the certificate
* Stamp with a tiara and crossed keys as well as the note “GRATIS”
* Depiction of the Suffering Face of Christ with fine hatching
* Historical frame with a gold-colored inner trim
The caption “Vera effigies sacri vultus Domini nostri Jesu Christi” means: “True image of the Holy Face of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
The accompanying certificate testifies, in its wording, that the image was laid on the Veronica Shroud venerated in St. Peter’s Basilica, on a cross relic, and on the tip of the spear of the Lord. It is therefore, according to the certificate, a so-called touch relic.
An interesting collectible piece for Catholic devotional culture and Roman pilgrimage tradition of the 19th century.
