Description from the seller
Antique Mahogany Stereoscope – Stereoscope for Glass Plates 45 x 107 mm Format – France, c. 1900–1920Description
A beautiful, original French hand stereoscope (stereoscope) made of high-quality mahogany, crafted in the heyday of early photography (La Belle Époque, ca. 1900–1920). This model is specifically designed for viewing stereoscopic glass negatives and positives in the then immensely popular French format of 45 x 107 mm. This format was introduced in 1893 by the famous French inventor Jules Richard and became the absolute standard for quality 3D photography. The viewer exterior is clean and minimalist in finish. This type was produced by leading French optical workshops in Paris (such as Jules Richard and the UNIS France consortium). The device features a refined focusing mechanism that can be smoothly operated with the metal dial on the right side. At the rear there is a hinged flap with a matte milk glass plate and an internal metal pressure spring to keep the glass plates firmly in place and to distribute the incident daylight evenly. The top lid can be opened and is equipped with a reflector (white flat surface/mirror) to cast additional light onto the glass plate for an optimum, bright 3D experience. The interior is equipped with the characteristic wooden separating wall to keep the views of the left and right eye strictly separated. An iconic and highly decorative piece of early photograpy, perfect for the serious collector of optical instruments and antique cameras!

In nice, original and complete condition with minor age and use-related signs that suit the age and contribute to the authentic character (see photos). The woodwork has a beautiful, warm patina. (View the photos carefully for an accurate impression of the cosmetic condition, these are an integral part of the description).
