Martinet antique French stereoscope by Maison Martinet of Paris, circa 1880, in very good physical condition and tested to be working.
Description from the seller
Step back in time with this splendid, authentic stereoscope (Claudet / Brewster-style) from the fin de siècle (c. 1875–1890). This fascinating optical instrument is a beautiful example of early 3D photography technology and a top find for collectors of early photography and antique French optics.
This specific specimen still bears the rare, original maker's label "Mon MARTINET" on the inside of the housing. This refers to the prestigious Ancienne Maison Martinet, located at 172 Rue de Rivoli in Paris. Instruments from this house are renowned for their superior optical quality and luxurious finish, and are highly sought after by international collectors.
The device is handcrafted from a rich, dark hardwood with a stunning deep grain. At the front it features the original matte glass window, set in a sturdy wooden frame with brass rivets, designed to distribute light perfectly when viewing stereoscopic photographs and glass diapositives.
The focusing operates via a classic, extendable tube of patinated brass that glides smoothly and ends in an elegant black eyepiece.
Specifications:
• Object type: Antique stereoscope / stereoscope viewer
• Maker / Manufacturer: Ancienne Maison Martinet (Paris)
• Signature: Equipped with the original partially preserved label "Mon MARTINET"
• Period: Late 19th century (c. 1875–1890)
• Material: Hardwood (mahogany / walnut), patinated brass and matte glass
• Technique: Manually extendable focusing tube
• Provenance: Paris, France
Condition Report:
The object is in a beautiful, authentic antique condition with a wonderful character patina appropriate for its age. The woodwork shows light, superficial signs of aging (small scratches/wear on the edges), which contributes to its historical appearance. The brass tube mechanism slides properly. The glass is intact and undamaged. The original paper/leather maker’s label is partly preserved, and the brand name "MARTINET" is clearly legible. See the photos for a precise sense of the condition; the photos are an integral part of the description. Considering the above and the fact that the object is about 150 years old, its physical condition is judged as very good.
Note: The depicted Plexiglas stand is for photography support only and is not part of the auction.
