Description from the seller
John Speed, A new description of Carolina.
London, 1676.
This magnificent and highly decorative map of Carolina, presents the southeastern coast of North America, including Carolina and parts of present-day Virginia and Georgia, with remarkable geographical and historical detail.
The map is beautifully embellished with an elaborate baroque title cartouche, a large royal coat of arms, a finely engraved compass rose with radiating rhumb lines, sailing ships, and detailed illustrations of mountains, rivers, settlements and coastal features.
Particularly striking are the representations of the Appalachian Mountains and the early colonial geography of the region, reflecting European knowledge of North America during the period of exploration and settlement.
John Speed is regarded as one of the most important figures in English cartography. His maps are celebrated for their artistic quality, historical importance and elaborate ornamentation.
The text on the backside is printed as often upside down.
Dimensions: 37,5 x 51 cm (engraving), 40 x 53 cm (paper).
Good condition. The map has been professionally restored in the corners and center, and some lines have been redrawn. See the photos for a good impression.
