Description from the seller
Title:
Antique hand-carved wooden Putto / Church Angel with layered polychromy – 18th century
Description:
Beautiful, authentic and fully hand-carved wooden Baroque putto (winged angel) from the 18th century. This characterful sculpture is a historical fragment of church furnishings, presumably originating from an altar railing or pulpit.
This lot features highly interesting and authentic characteristics for the connoisseur:
• Material & Patina: Fully hand-carved from wood. The figure has a later, sober black overpaint. Beneath it the original historic polychromy is beautifully and layeringly revealed: a deep olive-green ground layer and clear, authentic remnants of the original gold leaf.
• Mounting traces: On the underside there is the original, deep stake hole/pin hole (diameter about 1 cm) through which the statue was anchored in the church structure at the time. In one of the wings there is a later small hole for wall mounting.
• Condition: In good, well-used antique condition with a stunning, untouched patina. Given the age of over 200 years, a phalanx bone is missing from the left hand. The statue has deliberately not been cleaned or restored in order to preserve historical integrity. No active woodworm.
"- The loincloth has been stabilized in the past with two metal plates. This old, historical repair was overpainted at the time, causing the plates to be barely noticeable and the aesthetic appearance of the putto to remain fully intact (see detail photo)."
Important note about the photos
Please look at the attached photos carefully; they are an integral part of the condition description. There are specific close-up photos added of the historical features and age-related traces (the 1 cm wide stake hole at the bottom, the missing finger phalanx on the left hand, and the painted metal plates on the loincloth).
This gives you a complete and transparent view of this unique 18th-century object.
Dimensions: length 32 cm, width 20 cm, depth 15 cm
Weight: 700 g
