Iron jewellery box in Jugendstil style, repoussé with edelweiss and gentian, patinated metal on little feet, from Switzerland dating ca. 1905–1925; dimensions about 6 cm high, 14 cm wide and 11.8 cm deep, in good used condition with light signs of ageing.
Description from the seller
Art Nouveau - Jewelry box with edelweiss and gentian, repoussé and patinated metal on feet - Arts & Crafts
Switzerland, ca. 1905-1925
Rectangular box with a hinged, slightly upward-sloping lid in the shape of a small roof. The lid is repoussé with two Alpine flowers: on the left a gentian, on the right an edelweiss with the characteristic stamped heart of small circles. The background is punched with a basket-weave or braid pattern. The wall is textured in a wood-bark- or bamboo-like look. Around the lid runs a border of hand-formed scrolls (resembling bamboo or whipwork), and the base is decorated with a wavy seashell- or scallop-edge. The whole stands on four curled, scroll-like feet.
The dark, almost black patina is rubbed on the high areas to a warm copper/brass tone; on the lid there are spots where the original finish has flaked off. Possibly a copper or brass box with brown-black lacquer or stained patina (I cannot determine the material from the photo with certainty).
In good used condition, with patina appropriate for its age.
Dimensions:
approx. 6 cm H
approx. 14 cm W
approx. 11.8 cm D
Will be well packed and insured for shipping.
