Description from the seller
Large Art Nouveau Majolica / Barbotine Vase – Eichwald (Bernhard Bloch) – Model 1919 – Circa 1900
An extremely decorative and distinctive Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) majolica vase, circa 1900, produced by the renowned Bohemian manufacturer Eichwald (led by Bernhard Bloch).
This model (form number 1919) perfectly reflects the naturalistic aesthetics of the early Jugendstil period. The organic, flowing form is fitted on the sides with elegant handles featuring swooping whiplash lines.
The vase is richly decorated with large, three-dimensional roses and rosebuds in high relief (barbotine/appliqué), surrounded by detailed green leaves and stems. The piece is finished in a technically intricate majolica glaze with a beautiful, organic color transition: a deep warm chocolate brown at the base that gracefully flows upward into an ocher-yellow to olive-green glaze at the neck. The interior rim is finished with a lovely contrasting soft pink glaze.
On the underside lies the authentic, impressed model number 1919 and the handwritten black blind mark number 7. The absence of an export stamp such as "Made in Czechoslovakia" confirms an early production date before 1918, during the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
• Manufacturer: Eichwald (Bernhard Bloch)
• Origin: Eichwald, Bohemia (Austro-Hungary / today Dubí, Czechia)
• Period: Circa 1898 – 1905 (Art Nouveau / Jugendstil)
• Material: Majolica / Barbotine (glazed earthenware)
• Model number: 1919 (stamped on the underside)
In good, authentic condition, with a beautiful glaze and a fine, age-appropriate craquelé network in the glaze. No restorations. The object has some signs of use and age due to its delicate nature, including glaze loss on top of one of the ears (see detail photos for an accurate impression).
This lot is handled with the utmost care, packed extremely securely (double boxing). Shipping to the winning bidder is always fully insured and with a Track & Trace code.
