Description from the seller
Large Art Deco Vase with hand-painted bird decoration – Antoine Dubois – céramique montoise – ca. 1920-1930
An exceptionally charming and rare Art Deco ceramic vase with a refined naturalistic decoration, produced in Belgium around 1925 by the renowned master decorator Antoine Dubois for his factory Céramique Montoise in Bergen (Mons).
This characteristic interwar piece is a beautiful example of the high-quality Belgian faience art from the Art Deco period. The sturdy, square vase with rounded corners elegantly tapers down into a stable, lightly flaring square foot.
The vase is adorned all around with a very handsome hand-painted decoration of a colorful bird (a stylized thrush or finch with blue-yellow wings) sitting on a richly flowering branch with pink and white blossoms and green leaves. Nearby the branches, a subtly painted blue butterfly flutters as well.
Very notable is the refined background technique: the piece is executed in a unique speckled or moucheté glaze in soft salmon-pink, beige and brown tones. The rim of the vase is crisply finished with a contrasting black border, typical of the Art Deco aesthetic.
On the side of the body lies the original, hand-painted artist’s signature "A. Dubois". The underside bears the round blue-black factory stamp "MADE IN BELGIUM" and the hand-written atelier mark (decorator’s mark) of the ceramic painter.
• Designer: Antoine Dubois (1869–1943)
• Manufacturer: Céramique Montoise (Faïencerie de Mons)
