Description from the seller
LUDWIG MEIDNER – SEPTEMBERSSCHREI – 1920 – FIRST EDITION – 14 FULL-PAGE ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHS – GERMAN EXPRESSIONISM
Rare expressionist original edition by Ludwig Meidner (1884–1966), a major representative of German Expressionism, with 14 full-page original lithographs.
Ludwig Meidner: Septemberschrei. Hymns, Prayers, Blasphemies. With fourteen stone impressions.
Paul Cassirer Verlag, Berlin, 1920. First edition.
This exceptional artist’s book fuses Meidner’s expressionist visual language with his own literary texts. Septemberschrei brings together hymns, prayers, religious visions and provocative blasphemies against the backdrop of World War I and the social upheavals of those years.
Particularly impressive are the 14 full-page original lithographs with dramatic black-and-white contrasts, distorted figures and eruptive line work. The imprint states that the texts were created in summer, autumn and winter 1917 with the manuscript completed in December 1918 in Silesia.

Condition:
Age-appropriate, complete copy with signs of use. The pages show pronounced browning especially at the outer edges; the lithographs are clearly visible and retain strong contrast.
The binding is loosened and no longer fully secure. The cover has been externally repaired with bookbinder’s tape for stabilization. In addition, the book is housed in a detachable, UV-protective book sleeve that stabilizes the fragile binding.
The described defects should be considered in the appraisal. See detailed photographs.
A rare and impressive original work of German Expressionism, combining literature and original graphics from the immediate postwar period. Especially interesting for collectors of expressionist art, original-graphic artist books and the German avant-garde of the early 20th century.
