Info :
Karabakh-Azeri antique carpets originate from the Karabakh region in Azerbaijan and are among the most significant Caucasian carpets. They are known for rich natural colors (deep red, blue, ivory), large medallions, floral motifs, and geometric borders.
These carpets are hand-knotted from high-quality sheep wool (symmetrical knot) and often feature stylized rose or animal motifs. Ancient Karabakh carpets are today highly sought-after collectibles that impressively unite traditional handicraft and Azerbaijani culture.
Features of a Shirvan rug:
Pattern: Shirvan rugs are characterized by intricate, symmetric patterns with medallions, stylized flowers, rhombs, and abstract animal motifs.
Colors: Frequently used colors are red, blue, green, ivory, and yellow, often derived from natural plant and mineral dyes.
Material: These carpets are usually made of hand-spun wool on a cotton or woolen warp, giving them a fine, durable texture.
Border: The borders are typically richly decorated with Caucasian symbols, including hook motifs (protective symbols), wavy lines (watermarks), and rosettes.
Meaning & Rarity
Ancient Shirvan carpets are highly sought after today, as they are among the finest Caucasian carpets. They were produced in small villages, often with individual patterns, which makes every carpet unique. Especially valuable are well-preserved pieces with clear patterns and vivid natural colors.
This uploaded image shows a classic Shirvan rug with a typical red field, central medallions, and geometric ornaments. The striking edge patterns and fine details speak to a handmade one-of-a-kind piece.
