Original drawing by Yves Chaland on a greeting card, 11.5 × 23 cm, linked to Zoulou magazine, dated 1984, signed by Yves Chaland and Isabelle, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Rare and amusing original drawing by Yves Chaland (1957-1990), one of the major figures of the renewal of the clear line in Franco-Belgian comics of the 1980s.
Executed on the reverse of a greeting card, this composition offers a graphic wink to the magazine Zoulou, with which Chaland was associated in the 1980s.
The drawing features a male character, dressed in a suit and tie, striving to support the imposing letters forming the word “ZOULOU.”
The character, visibly exerting himself considerably, adopts a destabilized posture, legs apart and body leaning backward. A few beads of sweat emphasize the humorous aspect of the scene.
The whole is treated with the economy of means and the graphic elegance characteristic of Chaland’s work: a lively, precise and expressive line, in the service of a composition immediately legible.
A CLIN D’ŒIL TO THE ZOULOU MAGAZINE
This illustration directly references Zoulou, a French comic book and graphic creation magazine from the 1980s.
Through this humorous composition, Chaland plays with the magazine’s title, turning its monumental letters into a real weight that the character tries to bear.
This staging can be read as a playful, self-mocking evocation of the effort required to keep a comic book review alive.
The drawing thus constitutes an interesting testimony to the graphic universe and the creative spirit surrounding BD press of that period.
A PERSONAL GREETING CARD
The illustration is accompanied by the handwritten note:
“Bon courage et meilleurs vœux pour 1984”
It also bears the signatures of Yves Chaland and Isabelle, his wife.
This double signature gives the piece a personal dimension beyond its purely graphic interest.
