Specimen: bellissima mascella di squalo verdesca; Scientific name: Prionace glauca; Origin: Madagascar; Year: 2004; Weight: 1 kg; Dimensions: 20 cm × 20 cm × 8 cm; Condition: Buone condizioni.
Description from the seller
The blue shark, or verdesca, is the only species of the genus Prionace and belongs to the family Carcharhinidae. It is one of the few sharks known to be found practically in all temperate, tropical, and subtropical seas of the planet, in pelagic (offshore) waters but also coastal.
It can reach up to 190 m in depth, although some studies on the habits of these specimens near the coasts of Brazil show that this animal can descend beyond 350 m, diving in search of bottom prey. The verdesca has distinctive morphological features: the back is indigo blue, almost brilliant, the flanks and the tail are blue-gray, while the belly is a very marked white. The snout is elongated and pointed, the eyes are dark, large and round, surrounded by a small white ring and equipped with a nictitating membrane. The pectoral fins are elongated and pointed, the caudal fin is very developed in the upper lobe, which can reach up to 4 times that of the lower one. Maximum sizes reach 380-400 cm in length and up to 170 kg in weight. The teeth of Prionace glauca are small, pointed, slightly curved and serrated in the upper jaw, narrower and straighter in the lower jaw. The verdesca is considered a potentially dangerous shark for humans, although in the “dangerous sharks” classifications it ranks among the lower positions.
Well-executed taxidermy and properly preserved.
Good bidding.
