Specimen: corallo bowl, Halomitra pileus, a free-living circular coral bowl from the Solomon Islands, 2023, 4 kg, 30 × 17 × 14 cm, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Halomitra Pileus
Halomitra Pileus is a free-living, slender and delicate coral, circular in shape, sometimes dome-shaped or bell-shaped. It does not have an axial groove. The corallites are widely spaced and increase in size as the colony grows. In small colonies, septocostae radiate fanwise from the initial point. The thecae (septa) have teeth similar to those of Fungia mushrooms. The tentacles of mature colonies extend only at night; those of young colonies commonly extend during the day. Colonies can be large and cover extensive areas of horizontal substrate. They are light brown in color, often with bright pink or purple margins, especially at night when they feed. But their skeleton is perfectly white!
Please note that the corals in auction are still accompanied by regular CITES documentation. It is expected that the Solomon Islands will publish new regulations on coral export. A potential blockage would not only make it difficult to source these beautiful specimens on the market but also cause a significant increase in their prices.
A must-win lot, bowl with a particularly elongated shape. Stand not included, made from reclaimed material and used for photographic purposes only.
Good auction.
