Description
Across the elongated oval bezel, vertical and horizontal engravings enclosed by parallel borders form a rhythmic composition recalling an architectural façade. Repeated upright elements and transverse divisions create an abstract silhouette evocative of a sacred building, expressed through the Latin concept of templum.
With its emphasis on sacred architecture, this arrangement exemplifies a reference to Crusader-period architectural symbolism; its temple imagery evokes the Knights Templar tradition. The ring’s symbolic content can also be considered within the tradition of apotropaic jewellery through the Latin concept of tutela — protection and guardianship.
Broad shoulders, distinct engraved details, and brown and greenish patina characterize the piece. A fine discontinuity line is visible in the lower section of the band.
Note
Warm lighting inspired by museum illumination was used to naturally highlight the object’s surface, form, craftsmanship and historical appearance. Suspension cords and other display accessories visible in the photographs serve as presentation aids and are not included in the sale.
