Description from the seller

A good size 19th century Brussels porcelain figure representing the Virgin and child, measuring circa 29,5cm in height and weighing 841g, decorated in polychrome enamels and touches of gold. Annotated ND de Hal to the base.

The figure is a representation of the original wooden statue from 1267, located in the Basilica of Saint Martin in Halle, Belgium. The statue is black from centuries of ageing of the wood, waxing, and soot from devotional candles and oil lamps.

Local legend however claims that Mary caught cannonballs in her cloak during the failed siege of Halle by Philip of Cleves in 1489. The heavy cannon smoke and gunpowder from defending the city permanently blackened the Virgin's face and hands. As a physical testament to this defense, 32 of these historic cannonballs still remain within the walls of the Basilica.

Condition: Very good, no significant damages or repairs. Minor enamel wear commensurate with age.

This lot will be carefully packaged and sent by registered and insured mail.
