Description from the seller
Antique WMF Römer wine glass with hand-painted enamel, Rothenburg Meistertrunk
Germany, ca. 1890-1910
A rare and decorative wine glass on a foot by WMF, made as a souvenir of the famous legend of the Meistertrunk of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The goblet is made of smoke-green glass and has a gilded edge. It is richly painted with relief enamel: wine vines with grape clusters in green, yellow and red, and in the center the city coat of arms of Rothenburg (a red castle with two towers on a bridge in a white shield).
Around the goblet runs a white ribbon with a German inscription in Gothic script, with red initials:
“Um Tilly zu gewinnen / That Nusch den großen Zug / So laßt’s Euch nicht gereuen / Und trinket Euch genug.”
The text refers to Mayor Nusch, who in 1631, according to tradition, drank a large cask of wine in one gulp to save the town from the commander Tilly. This story became very popular around 1900 due to tourism and the annual festival drama.
The goblet sits on a silver-plated WMF frame (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik, Geislingen). It has a cast, wrought and chased stem with foliate work and a round foot with Renaissance ornament of acanthus vines and grapes. The frame is signed WMF.
A Römer or goblet glass for white wine, especially Rhine and Franconian wine. This example, due to the coat of arms and the text, is clearly a souvenir or keepsake glass, meant as a display piece in a vitrine or for special occasions.
Glass without visible chips or hairline cracks; enamel and gilding largely intact. The foot shows patina and light wear. Please study the photos carefully.
Dimensions:
approx. 17.8 cm H
approx. 9 cm D
approx. 8.2 cm D base
Well packed and insured shipping.
