A complete Tintin ensemble around Tintin au Tibet in French, a 1984 Casterman hardcover (T20) in very good condition, with a hand-signed Chinese signature 張充仁 attributed to Tchang Tchong-Jen, plus an original colour photo and envelope, offered as a single cohesive lot.
Description from the seller
A rarely offered and exceptionally complete Tintin ensemble around Tintin in Tibet.
A particularly substantial Tintin collection centered on Tchang Tchong-Jen, comprising a French-language copy of Tintin in Tibet, a handwritten Chinese signature ‘張充仁’, an original color photograph of a signing event, and the accompanying envelope.
The album was published by Casterman and printed in Belgium in January 1984. It is a bound C6 reprint with a red spine.
Chinese signature ‘張充仁’
On the opposite page to the title page, a light-blue slip is affixed with three vertically written traditional Chinese characters:
張充仁
These characters form the Chinese name Zhang Chongren, known in the Francophone Tintin world as Tchang Tchong-Jen.
Zhang Chongren played an important role in the history of Hergé and Tintin. The friendship between Hergé and Tchang had a significant influence on the creation of Le Lotus bleu, while Tchang also inspired the character of the same name.
The combination with Tintin in Tibet is particularly meaningful: the story is carried by Tintin’s unwavering quest to find his friend Tchang. Consequently, a signature attributed to Zhang Chongren in this album has an exceptionally strong substantive coherence.
The handwritten characters are attributed to Tchang Tchong-Jen/Zhang Chongren. There is no separate certificate of authenticity present. The signature is therefore offered carefully and transparently as attributed to Tchang Tchong-Jen and not as certified authentic.
Original photo with provenance indication
With the album there is an original color photograph showing a signing event.
On the reverse side is a handwritten provenance note that appears to read:
“A.S.B.L. Les Amis de Hergé – ADH Bob”
The reference to Les Amis de Hergé forms an interesting and relevant provenance element. The photograph was kept together with the album and the signed slip in an ivory-colored envelope and forms part of the same ensemble.
The exact date, location, and identities of the people depicted are not separately documented.
The lot consists of:
- the French-language album Tintin in Tibet;
- the light-blue slip with the handwritten characters 張充仁;
- the original color photograph of a signing event;
- the accompanying ivory-colored envelope;
- the provenance note “A.S.B.L. Les Amis de Hergé – ADH Bob” on the back of the photo.
All parts have been kept as a single unit and are offered only as a whole.
The album is in very good condition, with light wear and aging traces visible in the photos.
The front and back covers retain bright colors and a good overall appearance. The red spine is fully present. Along the edges and corners there is light wear.
The book block is well bound. The interior is complete, clean, and bright in color. There are no creases, missing parts, moisture stains, or notable inscriptions.
The light-blue slip with the Chinese characters is affixed with four small pieces of older translucent tape.
The original color photo is in good to very good condition and shows light aging and wear. The envelope is complete and shows slight discoloration appropriate to aging.
