Description from the seller

Ancient polychrome wood sculpture circa 1900 – Saint George on horseback with the dragon
Significant sacred carving from the Grödner region (Val Gardena / Tyrol) – around Ferdinand Demetz
For sale is an exceptionally expressive, fully carved wooden sculpture of Saint George on horseback in combat with the dragon.
The sculpture shows Saint George as an armored rider with a spear, while his horse tramples over the dragon. The entire composition is highly dynamic and a cabinet piece that is carved in the round from all sides.
Art-historical classification & origin
Origin: Probably Tyrol / Gröden (Val Gardena), late 19th to early 20th century (likely around 1900).
Workshop tradition: The design is stylistically closely connected with traditional Gröden wood carving. The academically influenced portrayal of the saint, the dynamic rider composition, and the detailed armor correspond to the milieu of the renowned Gröden workshops – such as the tradition around Ferdinand Demetz (1842–1902) in St. Ulrich. (A direct attribution is explicitly understood as an art-historical attribution without guarantee).
Details & execution
Carving: Movement-driven, deeply carved cloak, finely worked horse musculature, detailed bridle as well as an elaborately carved dragon with scales and open mouth.
Historical finish: Chalk/glue ground, polychrome color finish with contrasting coloring and gilded parts. The surface shows pronounced historical aging with craquelé, fine abrasion and noble patina, which underscores the object's authenticity.
Dimensions: Height approx. 38 cm, width approx. 35–36 cm.
