Introduced in 1987, the Samurai X3.0 is one of the most unusual Japanese film cameras of its era. It combines an SLR viewing system with a distinctive body shape inspired by compact video cameras, giving it a very different handling experience from a conventional 35mm SLR.

The camera uses standard 35mm film but records photographs in the 18 × 24mm half-frame format, allowing approximately twice as many exposures on a roll compared with a conventional 35mm full-frame camera. Its built-in 25-75mm F3.5-4.3 zoom lens covers a practical range from everyday photography to moderate telephoto shooting.

Autofocus, automatic exposure, motorized film transport, and a built-in flash make the Samurai X3.0 relatively easy to operate despite its unusual appearance.
