Natural star sapphire rough – Blue-gray color zoning with a fascinating light effect - 47.60 ct, from Kenya- 9.52 g

This exceptional star-sapphire presents itself as a largely natural rough stone with a distinctive, nearly hexagonal basic form. Its coloration ranges from cool bluish gray, dove blue to lightly violet-gray nuances, with the varying transparency giving the piece remarkable optical depth.

Already under normal lighting, numerous fine structures, growth zones and natural inclusions can be seen inside. The surface still clearly reveals the crystal's original character. Small matrix remnants and mineral adhesions along the edge areas form an appealing contrast to the blue-sheening corundum.

Especially impressive is the appearance when strongly point-illuminated or transmitted with light. Then the previously rather muted blues come to life and reach, in places, an intense, luminous sky blue and royal blue. At the same time, the different internal zones become visible, giving the crystal an almost spatial effect.

The designation star-sapphire refers to the so-called asterism, an optical effect that can occur through finely oriented needle-shaped inclusions in corundum. With material oriented accordingly and, in particular, after an appropriate cabochon cut, a star-shaped light glow can appear under a point light source. Precisely rough material with such internal structures is therefore especially interesting mineralogically and in terms of lapidary work.

Metaphysically, sapphire is traditionally associated with mental clarity, concentration and inner calm. Star-sapphires are also often attributed protective and guiding symbolism.

A characterful collector’s piece, particularly fascinating due to the contrast between its restrained bluish-gray appearance and the intense blue glow under targeted lighting.
