Description from the seller
Raphael Kirchner - Complete Series "Les Parfums" (4/6) - Original Edition Marcus Munk, 1901/1904 - Art Nouveau / Jugendstil
Splendid and rare lot consisting of 4 original vintage postcards illustrated by the famous Viennese artist Raphael Kirchner (1875–1917), undisputed master of Art Nouveau and Jugendstil illustration.
The postcards belong to the very famous and elegant series entitled "Les Parfums" (The Fragrances), originally published in Vienna by the renowned publisher Marcus Munk.
The 4 subjects included in the lot are:
• Ylang-Ylang: Magnificent frontal figure with white flowers in the hair.
• Héliotrope: Girl busy turning the petals of a flower ("she loves me, she loves me not") with the sea in the background.
• Chypre: Female profile with a small colored bird perched on the hand (with delicate hand-colored details).
• Corylopsis: Dreamy figure emerging from a starry motif, supporting a blazing cup.
Technical details and print variants:
• Period: 1901 – 1904 approximately.
• Publisher: Marcus Munk, Vienna.
• Notable features: Splendid lithographic impressions enriched by metallic gold gilt finishes, embossed, vivid sepia details, and sinuous graphics typical of the Liberty style.
• Back variants (Undivided Back): The lot reflects the editorial history of the era. Three postcards feature the international back of the very first 1901 print run (without address lines). The subject "Corylopsis" shows the contemporaneous official back variant from 1902-1904 (with dashed lines), printed by the same publisher for subsequent distribution.
Condition:
Excellent (Condition: Excellent / Do Not Travel)
The postcards have never been mailed, are free of inscriptions, stamps, or postal marks on the back. The corners are incredibly well preserved, the paper carries a beautiful natural patina of age, and the metallic gold parts retain their original reflective sheen. No heavy creases or tears.
An exceptional set with remarkable freshness, ideal for discerning philatelists and fans of Liberty.
