Specimen Chicoreus brevifrons – 85 mm – GEM quality with operculum; Scientific name chicoreus brevifrons mit Operculum; origin Caribbean.
Description from the seller
Product description & Scientific data
Scientific name: Chicoreus brevifrons (Lamarck, 1822).
Trivial name: Short-spined spiny murex snail (English: West Indian Murex).
Quality level: GEM (Flawless shell with no imperfections; all typical fronds and spines are perfectly preserved, the aperture lip as well as the delicate tip are undamaged).
Special feature: With original operculum (closing lid). Spiny snails have a horn-like operculum. Since it is usually lost after the animal's death, a pristine specimen with lid is far more valuable for serious collectors.
Size: 85 mm (8.5 cm). This is an excellent, stately size. The species averages 60–90 mm; larger specimens over 100 mm are considered “monsters” and are extremely rare. An 85 mm piece in GEM condition is a real eye-catcher for the display cabinet.
Family: Muricidae (spiny snails).
Origin & Habitat
Geographic origin: West Atlantic and Caribbean (common collecting sites span the Antilles, Grenada, Puerto Rico down to Brazil).
Habitat: A predatory marine snail species that lives in shallow waters, often near coral reefs, rocks, or muddy mangrove areas, where it preys on other mollusks.
