This extraordinary rutile-hematite epitaxy from Novo Horizonte, Brazil, impresses with its strong contrast between bright golden rutile crystals and dark, metallic-sheen hematite.

The numerous elongated and finely twinned rutile crystals grow in dense bundles and radiating formations between the robust, tabular hematite crystals. Depending on the incidence of light, intense golden reflections appear, while the hematite ranges from anthracite to almost black. The three-dimensional arrangement of the crystals gives the specimen a particularly striking and sculptural effect.

Mineralogically, the epitaxial intergrowth is of interest: The rutile grows crystallographically oriented on or with the hematite, thereby forming the characteristic, ordered crystal structures.
