Polychrome terracotta horse statue from the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE), Sichuan, China, measuring 107 × 90 × 30 cm, with TL test certificate, original authenticity, and restorations to leg fracture lines, two neck areas and the ears; acquired 2023 from a gallery in Spain with provenance from a private collection (previous owner 2022, from France).
Description from the seller
Polychrome terracotta. Thermoluminescence certificate attached. It presents restorations on the fracture lines of the legs, in two zones of the neck, and in the ears.
Dimensions: 107 x 90 x 30 cm.
This polychrome terracotta horse, originating from the Sichuan region in China, forms part of the funerary sculptural tradition associated with the Hang dynasty, one of the periods of greatest artistic splendor of Chinese civilization. The piece, of large scale, shows a representation of notable expressive force; the animal appears in a dynamic attitude, with one front leg advanced, suggesting contained movement. The head is slightly inclined forward, with the mouth open, revealing the teeth, the ears upright and facial features intensified by the modeling. The preservation of remnants of polychromy allows us to glimpse the original chromatic richness of the piece, which in its origin would have been painted with vivid colors, reinforcing its ceremonial and symbolic character.
The tail, represented separately in one of the specimens, together with the ornate bridle of the other, underscored the careful technical detail and the intention to give the figure a noble and controlled appearance. These elements indicate its link to the equestrian world of the elite, where the horse was a symbol of prestige, military power, and social status.
Thermoluminescence attached.
Present restorations on the fracture lines of the legs, two levels of the neck, and the ears.
