Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral and occurs in a variety of forms, such as botryoidal, fibrous, or stalagmitic masses in fractures and cavities, deep underground where the water table and hydrothermal fluids provide the medium for chemical precipitation. It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system; individual crystals, though rare, form as slender, acicular needles.
