Description from the seller
Christ on the cross in carved limewood – Germany, 18th century
Carved limewood statue in the round, depicting the Christ expiring, head inclined beneath a finely worked crown of thorns.
The perizonium is tied at the right hip and treated with soft drapery, while the anatomy is rendered with great mastery, characteristic of German religious sculpture of the 18th century.
The quality of the sculpture is distinguished by the expressiveness of the face, the elegance of the proportions, and the beautiful dark brown patina of the wood, revealing the volumes of the work.
Provenance: Larminet-Davioud collection (Lille).
Good condition with rare wood splits, in keeping with age.
Missing the cross. Beautiful original patina
