**Origin:** Eastern Mediterranean

**Material:** Terracotta (fired clay)

**Height:** 5 cm

DESCRIPTION

Ancient terracotta oil lamp attributed to the Hellenistic period, featuring a rounded, bowl-shaped body, a large central filling aperture, a short projecting wick nozzle and a small lateral handle.

The vessel rests on a distinct circular foot and displays fine horizontal turning marks around the body, characteristic of wheel-made pottery.

Its dark grey to brown surface retains extensive light-coloured mineral-like deposits, areas of surface wear and traces of its original finish.

The generously proportioned filling aperture and short wick nozzle reflect the functional design of early Mediterranean oil lamps, which were used for domestic illumination throughout the ancient Greek and Hellenistic world.

The compact proportions, simple construction and distinctive profile make this an attractive example of ancient-style utilitarian ceramic craftsmanship.

The lamp is presented on a decorative wooden display stand, as shown in the photographs.
