Description from the seller
L’Epitonium scalare, commonly known as the "Ladder Shell", is a marine gastropod mollusk belonging to the family Epitoniidae. This specimen is famous for its extraordinary spiral structure, characterized by prominent and widely spaced axial ridges that give the shell a ladder-like appearance, making it a fascinating shell.
Forma: Shape: elongated, with an elegant and regular spiral.
Coste assiali: The axial lamellae are separated by wide gaps and confer the shell its unmistakable ladder-like aesthetic.
Colore: Mother-of-pearl white or slightly translucent, with a smooth surface between the ridges.
Dimensioni: Usually between 5 and 10 cm in length, though some specimens may exceed these measurements.
Distribuzione e Habitat:
L’Epitonium scalare is primarily found in the waters of the western Pacific, with frequent finds along the coasts of Japan. It lives on sandy or muddy bottoms, often near colonies of sea anemones, on which it feeds.
È considerata una conchiglia collezionabile, in passato veniva scambiata come oggetto di lusso nelle corti europee.
Due to its fragility and rarity, collection of the Ladder Shell is regulated in some areas to prevent depletion of populations.
L'Epitonium scalare è un capolavoro della natura, una conchiglia con una particolare architettura dall'aspetto scultoreo.
