Natural specimen of Neobernaya spadicea (Chestnut Cowrie), 39.2 mm, from California; one item, weight 7 g, year 2026, authentic/original, with no reserve.
Description from the seller
Natural specimen of Neobernaya spadicea, a species belonging to the family Cypraeidae and known in malacological collecting as Chestnut Cowrie or ciprea castagna.
The shell has an oval, compact, and strongly convex shape, with a naturally smooth and glossy surface. The dorsum is characterized by a warm chestnut-orange coloration, interlaced with amber, copper, and reddish-brown tones. The central area, brighter, is bounded by progressively darker and irregular edges, creating an elegant contrast with the light margins.
The flanks and the base show hues ranging from porcelain white to cream and very pale pink. The separation between the chestnut dorsum zone and the lighter parts is developed through blended, wavy margins, one of the most recognizable chromatic elements of the species.
The base features the characteristic longitudinal aperture of cowries, narrow and regular, bordered by sturdy lips and a well-defined serration.
The specimen shows some small natural marks and imperfections on the dorsal surface, clearly visible in the photographs. These elements are reported with maximum transparency and should be considered part of the real condition of the shell.
With a size of 39.2 mm, it represents an interesting specimen for a malacological collection dedicated to Cypraeidae, California shells, and species from the North Pacific.
The lot is offered at auction without reserve price.
