Pair of polychrome terracotta Lokapala figures from the Tang dynasty, about 63 cm and 61 cm tall, mounted on modern wooden bases, depicted standing on a defeated demon, with TL dating analyses by Oxford Authentication and QED LABORATOIRE confirming Tang period.
Description from the seller
Pair of polychrome terracotta Lokapalas. China, Tang Dynasty
HEIGHT: 63.00 cm and 61.00 cm
Mounted on modern wooden bases.
Each figure is depicted standing, in a defiant stance, atop a defeated demon. The positioning of their arms accents the dramatic effect: one hand is raised—originally wielding a weapon, now lost—while the other is dynamically placed on the opposite side. Their muscular bodies wear boots, greaves, and several tunics under military armor. Their faces, broad and with stern expressions, are framed by elaborate helmets topped with a phoenix feather.
They are accompanied by a thermoluminescence (TL) analysis carried out by Oxford Authentication (code C106m89, dated May 16, 2006), which confirms their dating, and a TL analysis from QED LABORATOIRE - France (code QED 2613/EC-0201 dated March 28, 2026) that confirms their dating.
