Description from the seller
Rare historical maritime document: Passport for a foreign-flagged ship issued in the name of the King of the French (Louis-Philippe I) by the Customs and Navigation Administration.
• Date of issue: May 30, 1841
• Place: Dunkirk Office
• Destination: Amsterdam (Netherlands)
• cargo: Loaded with wines
Document details:
This large official document on heavy paper is adorned with a very beautiful and wide engraved frieze as an enclosing border. It bears two official engraved vignettes/stamps: that of the French Customs (with the anchor and scales) and that of the Ministry of Finance.
It is an official port clearance granted to Captain G. Guirich for his ship of 289 tons, after having undergone the ordinary customs inspection. The text also refers to taxes collected under the Revolutionary Law of 27 Vendémiaire Year II.
• Signatures: Signed at the bottom left by the Customs Commissioner/Controller.
• Condition: Good overall condition for a document of this era. Presence of creases from use vertical and horizontal, as well as light foxing and small marginal tears that do not affect the beauty of the engraving nor the legibility of the text (see photos).
A very fine piece for collectors passionate about maritime history, of mercantile marine in the 19th century, or of the Dunkirk region.
