AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

An exceptional and monumental pair of porcelain candelabra by the famous French porcelain manufacturer Jacob Petit (1796–1868). Both candelabra bear at its underside the authentic blue J.P. factory mark under the glaze, confirming production by the renowned Paris workshop.

These impressive candelabra are executed in emerald green porcelain. The porcelain is lavishly decorated with finely hand-painted floral bouquets, exotic birds and butterflies, complemented by refined raised gilded ornaments. The monumental dimensions, exceptional quality and rich decoration are characteristic of the most luxurious French decorative arts from the mid-19th century.

Each candelabrum is crowned by a detachable flaming capital above a circular oil-reservoir-shaped basin, from which four candle-arms spring. The gracefully curved arms end in imposing crowned, bearded masks, inspired by grotesques from the Renaissance. The central shaft is designed as a richly worked Corinthian column, adorned with finely chiselled acanthus leaves and elegant volutes.

The square plinth is beautifully decorated with hand-painted floral cartouches, bordered by richly gilded scrollwork. On each corner there is a finely modeled winged putto with a flaming torch, a particularly sculptural detail that gives the candelabra a pronounced architectural and monumental appearance. The stepped porcelain base is finished with richly gilded edges.
Jacob Petit belonged to the most innovative and celebrated French porcelain manufacturers of the 19th century. His work is known for its vivid colors, imaginative forms, and exceptionally rich decoration. His creations are nowadays highly sought after by collectors of 19th-century French porcelain. Monumental examples of this size, quality and condition are becoming increasingly rare.

A magnificent pair of candelabra of museum quality, in which sculptural grandeur and exceptional craftsmanship come together. An impressive ensemble that can form a significant focal point within a high-quality collection or a classical interior.
