This precious sheet is a classic example of carved embroidery combined with Burano lace.
The workmanship is distinguished by the typical ribbons or “fettucce” that form scrolls and floral motifs, joined together by bars with a darning stitch or network-connecting stitches. This vintage textile craft technique, historically used for the most refined bridal ensembles, is applied to high-quality fabrics such as pure fine cotton to make matrimonial sheets, flowers with four or more petals outlined by a continuous ribbon. Openwork carving: portions of fabric removed and replaced with embroidered network weaves to create beautiful plays of transparency. Small floral elements and embroidered branches with a filled stitch on the sides of the border.
