Description from the seller
Charming antique wooden sewing box or jewelry chest from the late 19th century (circa 1880), made from warm walnut wood. The box is decorated with a beautiful geometrically marquetry band with Tunbridge style influences and a central diamond-shaped escutcheon on the lid. Notably, the original removable inner tray (lined with purple fabric on the underside) is still present. The interior of the box and the tray are lined with authentic 19th-century paper featuring a star motif.
This lot also includes a matching Catholic 'Missal and Vespers Book' from the 1960s, bound by the firm P. Vink & Zonen from Alkmaar. The booklet features a gorgeous gold-to-edge finish with real gold leaf and is supplied in the original black cardboard slip case (foedraal). The booklet fits perfectly in the lower compartment beneath the removable tray.
Dimensions & Weight:
• Box: 28 cm wide x 18 cm deep x 12 cm high | Weight: 960 grams
• Missal: 9 cm wide x 15 cm deep x 3.5 cm high | Weight: 360 grams
Condition and damages:
The whole is in a lived-in, unrestored antique state with authentic patina and clear signs of aging:
• Woodwork of the box: The walnut surface shows scratches around, lacquer loss and light drying cracks due to age. On the left side of the lid, a small piece of veneer is missing at the edge.
• Interior of the box: The original star paper on the inside shows noticeable wear, cracks and age/moisture stains, especially around the locking hardware.
• Lock: The original brass escutcheon and the hasp in the lid are present, but the key is missing. The locking mechanism is therefore untested.
• Base: The bottom shows wear and remnants of old paint or stain.
• Missal & slip case: The booklet is in neat, used condition. The binding is sturdy and the gilding on the edge still shines nicely. The cardboard slip-case shows light wear to the edges and corners.
Please inspect the photos carefully for an accurate impression of the condition of this lot.
