AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Offered is an exceptionally rare and historically important wooden large-format camera: the Globus M. This camera was manufactured around 1905 by the renowned German manufacturer Ernst Herbst & Firl of Görlitz (at that time later taken over by the well-known Ernemann from Dresden). This specific model was marketed at the time as "Heimausrüstung" (home equipment). It offered photographers the perfect, stable intermediate step between a compact field camera and a heavy studio camera. The camera is built for the beloved European format of 13x18 cm (in practice exactly 12.5 x 17.5 cm), at the time one of the most sought-after formats due to the perfect balance between detail and handling.

Condition & Details:
Body: The wooden body (made from high-quality fine hardwood) is in exquisite, nearly museum-quality condition. The woodwork has a beautiful, deep gloss and the copper/brass fittings are excellently preserved with a nice original patina.
Mechanism: The camera features the unique independent rack-and-pinion system on both the front and rear standards. This mechanism operates very smoothly.
Bellow: The leather harmonic bellows have been tested and are 100% light-tight. There are no cracks or holes in the corners. Consequently, the camera is technically ready for actual photographic use (such as Large Format or Wet Plate / collodion photography).
Lens: Note: The front panel with the lens is missing from this lot. This gives the collector or restorer the opportunity to mount a historically correct lens (such as an early Goerz or Böhmke) to suit their preference, or to present the camera as a beautiful historical sculpture.
Accessories: The lot is offered very complete with: The original accompanying carrying case (showing authentic signs of use in line with its age). Three (3) original double wooden film plate holders, numbered from 1 to 6, also in wonderful condition and perfectly fitting.

Specifications:
Manufacturer: Ernst Herbst & Firl, Görlitz (Ernemann)
Model: Globus M (Heimausrüstung)
Production period: ca. 1905
Format: 13x18 cm (effectively 12.5 x 17.5 cm)
Material: Mahogany/walnut wood, brass, leather

An extremely rare collectible in an exceptionally beautiful external and technical condition. See the photos for an accurate impression of the camera’s magnificent build quality (in the sense of construction) but also with regard to the wood and the accessories.
