AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Welcome to our no-reserve auction. Beautiful and highly decorative, a complete fossil vertebra of a Woolly Mammoth. This vertebra was recovered from the seabed of the North Sea, an area that in prehistory formed part of Doggerland — the vast land bridge that connected Europe with Great Britain during the Ice Ages.

The Woolly Mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) was one of the most iconic animals of the Pleistocene. They lived in large herds on the cold steppe landscapes of Europe and Asia. Their sturdy skeleton, thick fur, and distinctive curved tusks made them well adapted to the extreme conditions of the last Ice Age.

Doggerland was known for its rich fauna, including mammoths, woolly rhinoceroses, giant deer, and steppe bison. As sea level rose after the end of the Ice Age, this landscape disappeared entirely beneath the water, which is why fossils such as this vertebra are now found on the seabed.

The age of this vertebra is estimated to be from the Weichselian and lies between roughly 40,000 and 100,000 years old.

An impressive and authentic piece of prehistory, ideal for collectors and enthusiasts of natural history.
