Specimen Phyllonotus pomum, a 100 mm West Atlantic Caribbean shell of exceptional GEM quality with its original operculum, dating from 1982.
Description from the seller
A Giant of the Reefs – A Biological Masterpiece in Record Size
Expand your collection with an absolute sensation of malacology: For sale is a completely flawless Phyllonotus pomum (Apple Apple-murex or Apple Murex) in exquisite GEM quality.
With a spectacular length of 100 mm this specimen reaches the absolute top class of its kind. Since Phyllonotus pomum typically remains much smaller, this is a rare MONSTER SIZE, approaching world records. The absolute highlight of this offer is the completeness: the shell comes with its original, horn-like operculum (closure lid) – a massive value factor for scientific collectors.
The wild sculpture of the tropical West Atlantic
The robust, heavy shell captivates with its characteristic, rough and highly knotted Apple structure as well as a beautifully color-intensive aperture in warm cream, yellow, and pink tones. The outer lip shows a perfectly pronounced, serrated relief. Since these predatory snails live in shallow reef zones, on oyster beds and in tidal areas, such gigantic shells are exposed to extreme environmental influences at sea. They almost always show heavy weathering, lip breaks, or parasite holes. A so gigantic a gem in this perfectly undamaged GEM condition including the lid is an absolute one-of-a-kind for any high-end display cabinet collection or an exclusive Wunderkammer.
