Description from the seller
Signed handwritten letter of 3 pages on 2 double-sided sheets.
- The writer responds to a letter from his correspondent concerning a delicate situation involving Mrs. Andoly and Mr. de Vaulabelle.
- He recalls his past ties with Mr. de Vaulabelle, whom he had known in Nice around 1870 before losing sight of him. He recounts having met him again later, renting a hotel in Saint-Raphaël, living somewhat on the margins, surrounded by rumors or stern judgments (« a bit of a bear »), but with whom he maintained cordial visits.
- Alphonse Karr asserts that no trouble or blameworthy conduct of intellectual or obvious order could be reproached to him in his lifetime, and offers prudent clarifications to illuminate his correspondent while advising him to remain measured in his démarches.
